mummy & me yoga

Since 2000 yogababy classes have recognised the need for mothers and babies to stay connected in the early phase of parenting.  While many exercise classes focus only on the mother, yogababy has lead the way in placing the baby in the centre of the experience, thereby helping the attachment between mother and baby blossom.

What is Mummy & Me Yoga?
Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful baby! Yoga is a wonderful way of looking after yourself after the birth of your baby. Yoga relaxes the nervous system and brings balance to the endocrine system (hormonal balance).  It helps to create a balance between your body's physical needs and your emotional state.

Mummy and Me yoga beginner classes focus on postures specifically designed for the postnatal months by helping your body regain strength and tone in a safe and effective way. The emphasis is on strengthening the pelvic floor, the abdomen, legs and back as well as on opening and relaxing tensions in the shoulders, neck and arms.

The yoga taught in these classes is gentle and slow, giving you time to integrate the experiences of your body after birth. Within six months of regular practice you will find you have regained your core strength and energy. Most mums will look forward to moving into the Mummy and Me yoga advanced classes once their babies begin to actively crawl.

How are the babies involved?

yogababy offers your baby a special sequence of movements that assist in his/her postural development of the child from lying to walking.  Lack of physical exercise for a baby will have the same effects as for an adult - poor digestion, constipation, emotional agitation, poor circulation and laziness.  In the yogababy classes we recognise that the baby needs to strengthen both his/her muscular abilities and nervous system.  The baby's physical development requires times of unfettered energy expression  and times of peaceful stillness.  In the yogababy classes both these needs are met.

The classes include special activities to bond with your baby and connect with other mothers. During the sessions you will be offered the choice to involve your baby in the yoga postures or have him or her near to you. After the baby yoga sequence, there is time for yoga for you, followed by singing and time for you and your baby to socialise with others.

Since these classes are baby centred we will ask you to attend to your your baby's needs either by feeding, changing, holding or generally reassuring them in your presence. With the support of others, you will be able to develop a balance between doing yoga for yourself and meeting the needs of your baby.

What are the benefits of Mummy and Me Yoga?

• More confidence in your ability to handle difficult and confronting situations.
• Baby postural development and energy exploration.
• An increase in abdominal and pelvic floor stability thereby reducing back pain.

When can I start and how long can I continue?
You can begin to practise gentle breathing exercises four weeks after your birth. Depending on your birth, we suggest 6 weeks after an unassisted vaginal birth and from 8 to 12 weeks for a caesarean delivery. It is very important that you attend when you feel physically capable. The classes are suitable for babies 6 weeks old to active crawling.

You are able to move on to the Mummy and Me yoga advanced classes when your baby begins to actively crawl.  This class can accomodate actively crawling to early walkers up to the age of two years old.
