2012 teacher training

In-depth specialised training in Prenatal, Postnatal and Active Birth Education.  Courses covering teaching safe asana for pregnancy, specialising in pregnancy yoga and teaching yoga to postnatal women.

Recognition as a Pre/Postnatal Yoga teacher: You will need certification in Yoga teaching (registered yoga teacher training course) and have completed the  Prenatal/postnatal yoga teacher training to receive recognition by Yoga Australia as a Pre/Post natal Yoga teacher.

Midwives, childbirth educators and doulas may wish to attend the course to enhance your own knowledge of pregnancy/postnatal yoga practices and the active birth method, and to assist in the care of your clients.

yogababy's specialised courses are facilitated and taught by Suzanne Swan (B A, PostGrad Psychology, Dip Transpersonal Psychology, Dip Yoga for Pregnancy and Active Birth, Aware Parenting instructor).  She has been teaching prenatal and postnatal yoga classes, active birth and parenting workshops since 1999. She is recognised as a Senior Level teacher with Yoga Australia, member of the National Association of Childbirth Educators and consumer member of the Australian College of Midwives. 

 

Module 1: Safe yoga practise during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the baby's weight and greater suppleness in the joints changes a woman's posture and muscle tone. It is highly likely that at some time in the future a pregnant woman will attend your class or one of your regular students will tell you she is pregnant. You will need to know how to care for her in your class and if necessary when to refer her on to a specialised pregnancy class. It is vital that anyone teaching yoga to pregnant women receive additional expertise.  

This course is for yoga teachers, or teachers in training, midwives, childbirth educators or doulas who are interested in understanding the complex changes that occur during pregnancy.  Pregnant women can also attend.

Understand the different stages of pregnancy and the effects of pregnancyon the female body; learn the anatomy of the female pelvis and the benefits of yoga in pregnancy; learn beneficial yoga asanas for pregnant women in a general class; know the contra-indicators for pregnancy; and learn appropriate modifications for safe practice.

Module 2: Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga teacher training

This 50 hour intensive teacher training will assist you to confidently teach safe yoga classes for pregnant women during all stages of pregnancy. It is for certified yoga teachers, teachers in training, midwives, childbirth educators or doulas. Immerse yourself in the study of prenatal and postnatal yoga and prepare yourself for teaching active birth education skills( note: Module 1: Safe Practices is included in this course). The course includes lectures, class observations, practice and discussion (35 hours lectures, 5 hours observation and supervision, 10 hours non-contact).

Specialising in Pregnancy yoga

Understanding the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth; Physical and spiritual development of the baby; Teaching pranayama and asanas to the different stages of pregnancy; Understanding the complications of pregnancy; Knowing the contra-indicators for yoga practice, includes asana modifications for safe practice; The philosophy, ethics and right practice for teaching pregnant women yoga; Peri natal psychology - understanding the mother and baby relationship inutero;Putting it into action with practice, observation, take home exam and study guide.

Teaching yoga to the postnatal woman

The philosophy, ethics and right practice for teaching women postnatally
Knowledge of postpartum conditions and the contra-indications for yoga practice and asana modifications
Postnatal yoga theory and practice

Dates for 2012 (two weekends)

4th May - Friday evening 6pm - 9pm,

5th-6th May and 9th and 10th June  - Saturday and Sunday 9am - 5pm

Module 3: Active Birth educator training

This workshop is for midwives, pregnancy yoga teachers, childbirth educators, doulas and pregnant couples interested in understanding the principles of Active Birth.

Teaching Active Birth

Working with pregnant women to enhance their enjoyment and understanding of birth;Teaching active birth principles and the birth journey;Understanding the body language of birth;Birth skills of breath awareness, positioning, massage, vocalisation and relaxation;Teaching active birth positions for 1st and 2nd stage of labour;Optimal foetal positioning;Working with pregnant women and/or couples to increase potential to achieve an active birth.

Saturday and Sunday 9am - 5pm

Dates: 4th - 5th Nov

Toowong: $495 (inc GST. Non-refundable deposit of $55 required.

In the last four years, Suzanne Swan has conducted hospital in-service sessions for midwives, childbirth educators and physiotherapists.  She has also presented the 'Body Language of Birth' workshop at midwives conferences and privately.
