The Power of Tonal Sounds in Labour

When labour intensifies, many women instinctively hold their breath or tense up. But sound can be a powerful tool.
In our Pregnancy Yoga and Active Birth workshop, we learned how tonal sounds—deep, open sounds like humming or moaning—help soften the body, release tension, and create rhythm during contractions.

Ash, who attended our Pregnancy Yoga and Active Birth workshop, shared how using tonal sounds through each contraction gave her a sense of focus and grounding. She described it as “riding the wave rather than being consumed by it.”

Try it: Experiment with different sounds whilst on the toilet or even while exhaling after a long day. Notice which tones help your body feel more relaxed and open.
